Deacons Serve the Congregation by...
- Organizing and providing refreshments for fellowship time every Sunday morning during Sunday School and prior to the worship service.
- Serving the Sacrament of Holy Communion with Elders. Communion is also prepared and cleaned up by Deacons following each service. Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month at all services.
- Contacting once a month, the members of the congregation and their families who are in need of companionship due to infirmity, age, etc. as part of our “Thinking of You” or Care Partners programs.
- Delivering flowers which are donated for the Sunday services (as well as poinsettias, Easter lilies and other special occasion flowers) to someone recuperating from an illness.
- Coordinating the Prayer Garden Bricks project.
- Organizing the ushering teams and sending reminders to all team members at the beginning of each month.
- Organizing and providing funeral luncheons upon request.
- Providing servers for the dinner portion of Parkwood's Annual Strawberry Festival.
- Serving as the “backup” servers for Parkwood's monthly Spaghetti Dinners.
- Preparing and delivering cookies and soup before Christmas to Parkwood staff members and those on our “Thinking of You” list.
- Organizing and serving a cookie and punch reception at Hampton Fields during the Christmas season. Deacons Serve the Community by...
- Supporting the Mars Youth Home at Easter and during the month of August. The Deacons coordinate donations from the congregation with purchases made to give these children some “extras.” Easter choices are more than candy; calling cards, lounging pajamas, gift cards and other items suggested by the Home are gathered. In August the thrust is back to school. Each of the group cottages is given large baskets overflowing with pens, pencils, rulers, markers, paper, etc.
- Collecting toiletries and giving a financial donation to a Prison Ministry at the Allegheny County Jail twice a year.
- Providing Giant Eagle gift cards at Thanksgiving and Christmas to congregants and non-congregants who have financial problems. Also, before Christmas an “Angel” tree is set up in the Narthex. Members of the congregation are encouraged to buy a gift for an anonymous person who would not otherwise receive a gift. When necessary, Deacon funds are used to supplement to fulfill the needs.
- In addition, in 2007, the Deacons wanted to help the children who attend the Tuesday Club at Calvert Church in Etna. Therefore, we purchased t-shirts with “Tuesday Club” on them for each attendee and collected new and gently used books from the congregation to be placed on Calvert’s bookshelves.
- In August, the Deacons collect trash along Mt Royal Blvd from Route 8 to Duncan Avenue.
